Safety Notes
Acetic acid is a liquid with a strong odor and sour taste, soluble in water, alcohol, ether, and benzene. General introduction: Acetic acid (according to Iupac, ethanoic acid) is an organic compound with the chemical formula CH3COOH. It is an undiluted colorless liquid also known as glacial acetic acid. It is the main ingredient of vinegar (besides water), and has a distinctive sour taste and pungent odor. Chemical properties: Acetic acid is a weak acid, concentrated CH3COOH is corrosive, and attacks the skin. Acetic acid is the simplest carboxylic acid. It is a chemical reagent and industrial chemical, primarily Liquid acetic acid is a wet protic solvent (polar molecule), similar to Ethanol and water. Acetic acid can corrode metals such as iron, manganese and zinc producing hydrogen gas and corresponding metal salts called acetates. Aluminum, when exposed to oxygen, forms a thin film of aluminum oxide on its surface, making it relatively resistant to acid corrosion, allowing aluminum containers to be used to transport acetic acid. Acetic acid can create chemical reactions typical of the carboxylic acid group such as creating water and metal ethanoate when reacting with alkalis. Acetic acid creates metal ethanoate when reacting with metals; and produces metal ethanoates, water and carbon dioxide when CH3COOH reacts with carbonates and bicarbonates. The most typical reaction of acetic acid is to form Ethanol, and to form derivatives such as acetyl chloride by replacing the -OH group with -Cl. Other alternative derivatives include acetic anhydride, which is produced by the condensation reaction that tears a water molecule from two molecules of acetic acid. Its esters can similarly be produced by esterification, and amides. When heated above 440°C, acetic acid decomposes to carbon dioxide and methane, or to rathenon and water. Acetic acid can be recognized by its characteristic odor. The color change reaction for salts of acetic acid is to react with iron(III) chloride solution, this reaction produces a deep red color after acidification. Application of Acetic Acid: The main use of acetic acid is the production of vinyl acetate monomer. This application consumes approximately 40% to 45% of the world's acetic acid production. CH3COOH as solvent Glacial acetic acid is a good polar protic solvent as mentioned above. It is commonly used as a solvent Five 2006, about 20% of acetic acid is used to produce TPA. Glacial acetic acid is used in analytical chemistry to estimate weakly alkaline substances such as organic amides. Glacial acetic acid is a weaker base than water, so the amide behaves as a strong base in this moderately acidic solution. It can then be titrated using a glacial acetic acid solution of a very strong acid such as perchloric acid. Dilute acetic acid is also used to create mild acidity. For example, on a household scale, acetic acid is used as a lime scale remover from faucets and kettles. Dilute glacial acetic acid solutions can be used in clinical laboratories to dissolve acetic acid used in the textile, rubber, and plating chemicals industries. Every year the world consumes an amount of vinegar equivalent to 160.000 tons of pure Acetic Acid (or 3.2 billion liters of vinegar containing 5% Acetic Acid). Acetic acid is widely used in the food and medical industry in some countries with a huge demand for vinegar such as China, France, and Germany. There is also a volume of concentrated Acetic Acid produced on an industrial scale (production of esters, acetyl, acetaldehyde, cellulose acetal, synthesis of indigo, synthesis of herbicides, synthesis of aspirin and many other pharmaceuticals, processing of latex into semi-finished rubber). Safe to use: Wash immediately if oil splashes into your eyes or skin with plenty of water and soap, keep out of reach of children. Storage: Acetic acid must be kept in a covered warehouse, avoid places with temperatures too high above 50°C, avoid places that can easily cause fires and explosions.
